Overview
A Soto Zen temple at the center of Sugamo Jizo-dori, known nationwide for its Enmei Jizo (Togenuki Jizo) principal image. Queues form daily to wash the Arai Kannon statue, believed to heal whatever body part is rubbed. Fair days on the 4th, 14th, and 24th of each month are especially lively.
Origins
Kogan-ji was founded in 1596 by Fugaku Taisuke as a branch temple of Kumagaya Shufuku-ji, affiliated with the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. The summer fair at Koganji Temple (home of the Togenuki Jizo) in Sugamo, "Grandma's Harajuku." Fairs are held on days with the number 4, and the Togenuki Jizo shopping street comes alive. Even in summer heat, visitors queue to pray at the Arai Kannon statue for health and longevity.
