A Rinzai Myoshinji Zen temple founded in 1654 by the lords of Shibata and Kitsuki domains, with the revered Zen master Gudo Toshoku as founding priest. Its autumn foliage became so famous throughout Edo during the Kyoho era that it earned the nickname 'Momiji-dera' (Maple Temple). Poets including Kobayashi Issa composed verses about its beauty.
