概要
A major Tendai temple founded to protect Edo Castle from the northeast (kimon/demon gate). At its peak, the entire Ueno hill was temple grounds. Six Tokugawa shoguns are buried here. It was modeled after Enryakuji on Mt. Hiei. During the Boshin War, the Battle of Ueno devastated much of the complex, but the main hall was later rebuilt using a structure relocated from Kitain in Kawagoe.

Founded in 1625 by Tenkai Daisojo on orders of the second shogun Hidetada to guard Edo Castle from the demon gate direction. Named Toeizan after Enryakuji on Mt. 1868
Battle of Ueno Site
1868年（慶応4年）5月15日、現在の上野公園（当時の寛永寺境内）を拠点とした彰義隊と新政府軍の戦闘。徳川家への忠義を貫こうとする旧幕臣・町人らが結成した彰義隊は、一時は数千名に膨れ上がり上野に立て籠もった。新政府軍は大村益次郎の指揮のもと、アームストロング砲など最新兵器を投入し、わずか一日でこれを制圧した。彰義隊の頭取・渋沢成一郎らは脱出し、後に振武軍として再戦を試みるが失敗に終わった。この戦闘で寛永寺の堂塔の多くが焼失し、現在の上野公園の広大な空き地が形成された。江戸が事実上無血開城された後の最後の抵抗として歴史に刻まれる。現在、上野公園内の彰義隊の墓には今も花が供えられ、西郷隆盛像とともに明治維新の激動を伝えている。黒門（現移築）には当時の弾痕が生々しく残る。

上野戦争
慶応4年（1868年）5月15日、徳川慶喜に忠誠を誓う彰義隊約2,000名が上野の寛永寺に立て篭もり、大村益次郎率いる新政府軍と激突した。アームストロング砲の砲撃により、わずか1日で彰義隊は壊滅。寛永寺の大伽藍は焼失し、かつての徳川家の菩提寺は廃墟と化した。この地は後に日本初の公園・上野公園となる。

Tenkai founded this temple based on Ieyasu's vision to protect Edo from the northeast demon gate, modeling it on Enryakuji as "Toeizan." From the third shogun Iemitsu (Ieyasu's grandson) onward, six shoguns were buried here, making it one of the grandest Tokugawa family temples. At its height, the entire Ueno hill was temple territory.

In 1868, Tokugawa Yoshinobu confined himself at Kan'eiji's Daijiin after his defeat at Toba-Fushimi. When the Shogitai lost the Battle of Ueno in May, the magnificent temple complex was destroyed. Kan'eiji, which had flourished as the Tokugawa family temple, met its end alongside the shogunate.
