Founded c.1654 as Kan'eiji's founder hall. Called "Ryo-Daishi" for jointly enshrining Tenkai and Ryogen. It survived the 1868 Battle of Ueno, and in the Meiji era the Rinnoji name from Mt. Hiei was transferred here. Known as a prayer site for protection from cancer.
