In 1605 (Keichō 10), Honda Tadakatsu — one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa and the new lord of Kuwana Domain — devoted himself to rebuilding the shrine buildings of Tado Taisha, which had been devastated by Nobunaga's earlier burning. Under Tadakatsu's support, Tado Taisha recovered its position as the religious center of northern Ise.

In 1571 (Genki 2), as part of his suppression campaign against the Nagashima Ikkō-ikki, Oda Nobunaga ordered the burning of Hōun-ji, the shrine-temple complex of Tado Taisha. The conflagration destroyed over seventy halls and pagodas, dealing a catastrophic blow to this great syncretic religious center.
