Sumadera is the Shingon Sumadera-sect head temple, founded in 886 on the Genpei battlefield of Suma. The grounds contain the Atsumori Zuka mound recalling the duel of Taira no Atsumori and Kumagai Naozane, along with many Genpei War relics and literary associations.
