A gate of Edo Castle's outer defenses built in 1629 by daimyo from Dewa and Mutsu provinces, guarded by rotating hatamoto and daimyo of 5,000-10,000 koku rank. The name derives from the nearby residences of the shogun's tea-master (sukiya-bozu) officials and gave rise to the place-names Sukiyamachi and Sukiyabashi.
