One of the 36 outer gates of Edo Castle, guarding the southern perimeter. Kato Tadahiro of Kumamoto domain built the surrounding stone walls as part of the shogunal tenka-bushin construction in 1614, and Date Masamune of Sendai completed the gate walls in 1628. One of the 36 outer gates of Edo Castle. Stone walls built by Kato Tadahiro in 1614 and gate walls by Date Masamune in 1628. Dismantled 1873. Sections of the walls remain in Hibiya Park, and the western moat is preserved as Shinji-ike Pond.
