Rinnoji Temple settled at its present site in Kitayama after Date Masamune, founder of the Sendai domain, entered the region. Thereafter protected by the Date family, it grew as a leading Soto Zen temple, and its garden took shape over the Edo period. The garden remains a beloved scenic spot at the northern edge of the castle town Masamune founded.
