Chokokuji in Ueda, Nagano, is a Soto Zen temple and Sanada clan mausoleum (Sanada Honbyo), enshrining Sanada Masayuki and Yukimura. The adjacent Sanada Treasure Hall displays armor, letters, and arms. Together with Ueda Castle ruins, it is the heart of any Sanada heritage tour.
Origins
Chokoku-ji Temple was founded in 1622 (Genna 8) by Sanada Nobuyuki (Nobushige), who established it in Ueda to hold memorial services on the seventh anniversary of his father Sanada Masayuki's death. Nobushige's (Yukimura's) memorial tablet is also enshrined here, honoring the hero who met a glorious end at the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615. Since the NHK drama 'Sanada Maru,' his fame has grown nationwide, making Chokokuji one of the essential pilgrimage stops alongside Ueda Castle and Ikushima Tarushima Shrine.

Chokokuji is the Sanada clan's ancestral temple. Masayuki died in exile at Kudoyama in 1611, and his remains were later reinterred here. His mausoleum stands in the precinct, drawing devotees of the Sanada clan who come to pay respects to the master strategist.
