Sakamoto Castle was built in 1571 by Akechi Mitsuhide on Nobunaga's orders as a lake castle on Lake Biwa. After the Honnoji Incident in 1582, it was attacked by Hideyoshi's forces and Mitsuhide's family perished as the castle burned. Only a monument remains today, though excavations have revealed stone wall foundations.
