Saikyoji is the head temple of the Tendai Shinsei sect, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. Revitalized in 1486 by the monk Shinsei, it became the center of unceasing nembutsu chanting. The temple served as Akechi Mitsuhide's family temple; his grave and those of his family and retainers stand in the grounds.
