Saikyoji is known as the family temple of Akechi Mitsuhide. Its grounds hold the graves of Mitsuhide, his wife Hiroko, and his clan and retainers. Even after Mitsuhide's death following his defeat in the Honno-ji Incident of 1582, memorial services for the Akechi clan continue to this day. The temple's bell, said to have been donated by Mitsuhide, is affectionately known as the "Akechi Bell."

Traditionally founded by Prince Shotoku, Saikyoji is the head temple of the Tendai Shinsei sect. It also served as Akechi Mitsuhide's family temple, and his grave and those of his family stand in the grounds.
