In 1592, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Nagoya Castle nearby as his base for invading Korea. Yobuko rapidly grew as the castle's outer port, handling much of the supplies and provisions shipped to the continent. Today's bustling market street has its roots in this wartime port development.
