Second Korean Campaign (Keichō Campaign)
The Keichō Campaign (1597-98) was Japan's second invasion of Korea after failed peace negotiations from the first campaign. Some 140,000 troops crossed to Korea but faced fierce resistance from Korean civilians, Admiral Yi Sun-sin's navy, and Ming reinforcements. When Hideyoshi died in Osaka in August 1598, his commanders ordered withdrawal. Japanese forces suffered significant losses to Yi's navy during the retreat (Battle of Noryang). The campaign ended in complete failure, having devastated all three nations involved.
