A Hachimangu shrine featuring a National Treasure main hall built in 1607 by Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai domain. The Gongen-zukuri complex of three connected halls — main hall, stone chamber, and worship hall — is adorned with the magnificent gold-and-lacquer ornamentation of the Azuchi-Momoyama period and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Momoyama architecture.

Origins

Built in 1607 by Date Masamune, transferring the deity from Uguisumaru Shrine in Chikuzen (Fukuoka). The main hall is a National Treasure. It is the origin of the Matsu-taki Festival (Donto-sai).
