Sanada Yukimura

On May 7, 1615, in the final stages of the Summer Siege of Osaka, Sanada Yukimura (Nobushige) fell near Yasui Shrine (then called Osaka). Having charged Ieyasu's headquarters three times and been hailed as 'Japan's greatest warrior,' Yukimura was mortally wounded here and met his end. The shrine preserves a monument inscribed 'Site of Sanada Yukimura's Death in Battle' and a seated bronze statue, drawing many admirers to pay tribute at the hero's final resting place.

It is said that Michizane, suddenly exiled to Dazaifu in 901, stopped at this site during his westward journey from the capital. The place name "Osaka" (逢阪, "meeting slope") evokes a land of farewells, and tradition holds that he paused here to gaze back longingly at Kyoto, knowing he would never return. Yasui Shrine honors this legend by enshrining him as one of its deities.
