When Hideyoshi built the Jurakudai palace, he donated its rear gate to Myokakuji. The present main gate of the temple is believed to be this relocated Jurakudai gate, a precious remnant of Momoyama-era architecture.

Nobunaga used Myokakuji as his lodgings in Kyoto over 20 times. On June 1, 1582, he stayed here before moving to Honno-ji, where Mitsuhide's forces struck the next morning. His heir Nobutada, learning of the attack from this temple, moved to Nijo Palace for a last stand but was killed.
