A Tenmangu shrine dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, located just east of the Imperial Palace. After Michizane died at Dazaifu in 903, the court, fearing his vengeful spirit, enshrined him as Tenjin. Court nobles would stop here on their way to attend the palace, praying for success in learning. Known as "Higashi Tenjin-san" since the Muromachi period, this shrine reflects the deep reverence for Michizane within court culture.
