Nishiki Tenmangu was founded in 1003 as an outer shrine of Sugawara no Michizane's family shrine, enshrining his spirit. Michizane lived in Kyoto until his exile to Dazaifu in 901, and merchants of the Nishiki district long held deep faith in him. Ever since, he has been venerated as "the Nishiki Tenjin," guardian of academic success and Kyoto's celebrated food culture.
