Overview

Ise Jingu Geku (Toyouke Daijingu), the Outer Shrine, enshrines Toyouke no Omikami — guardian of food, clothing, shelter, and industry. Located 6 km from the Inner Shrine in a majestic cedar forest, it has been visited first by pilgrims since 477 CE. Like the Naiku, it undergoes Shikinen Sengu every 20 years.

Origins

According to tradition, the shrine was founded in 477, the 22nd year of Emperor Yuryaku's reign, when Toyouke Omikami was invited from Tanba Province to serve as the deity of sacred food offerings for Amaterasu Omikami. Visiting hours vary by month: Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr/Sep 5:00 AM–6:00 PM; May–Aug 5:00 AM–7:00 PM; Oct/Nov/Dec 5:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Admission

Free entry to the shrine precincts. The Sengukan Museum requires a separate admission fee: general ¥300, elementary/junior high ¥100, preschoolers (with guardian) free.
