Overview
A Tendai temple known as the \'Hagi Temple\' for its autumn bush clover blossoms, enshrining Bishamonten. Built on the very site where the last Hojo regent Takatoki and hundreds of retainers took their lives, marking the fall of the Hojo clan in 1333.

Hokaiji owes its very existence to the day Nitta Yoshisada (1301–1338) stormed Kamakura on May 22, 1333, forcing the last regent Hojo Takatoki into collective suicide and ending the Kamakura shogunate. Yoshisada had raised an army in Kozuke Province under imperial decree from Emperor Go-Daigo, breached the Inamuragasaki shoreline, and entered Kamakura. Under the subsequent Kemmu Restoration, Yoshisada clashed with Ashikaga Takauji over rewards and came to play a central role in the Wars of the Northern and Southern Courts. Hokaiji, as the memorial temple for the Hojo clan Yoshisada destroyed, preserves the memory of that pivotal day.
