Thomas Glover was a Scottish merchant who came to Nagasaki in 1861 at the age of 21. He established Glover & Co. and supplied arms, ammunition, and warships to the Satsuma and Choshu domains, indirectly supporting the movement to overthrow the shogunate. He had deep connections with Sakamoto Ryoma and cooperated with the Kameyama Shachu's trading activities. After the Meiji Restoration, he was active as an industrialist in shipbuilding, coal mining, and beer brewing, making enormous contributions to Japan's modernization. His former residence is designated an Important Cultural Property as the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan.
