Ruins of the great Soto Zen temple that served as the Shimazu clan's ancestral temple from the Muromachi period, once the largest temple in Satsuma. Fukushoji was founded in 1394 by Shimazu Motohisa as the foremost temple of Satsuma and the Shimazu clan's bodaiji (ancestral temple). It was abolished during the Meiji government's campaign against Buddhism (haibutsu kishaku) and today only the garden and cemetery survive.
