A daimyo garden created by Shimazu Mitsuhisa in 1658, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The panorama with Sakurajima and Kinko Bay as borrowed scenery is among Japan's finest garden views. The adjacent Shoko Shuseikan is a 2015 UNESCO World Heritage site. A Satsuma Kiriko glassware workshop preserves the modernization legacy of Shimazu Nariakira.

Shimazu Nariakira cherished Sengan-en and built Japan's first modern industrial complex, the Shuseikan, on the adjacent land. He launched reverberatory furnaces, blast furnaces, and glassworks in succession, driving Satsuma's modernization. As the enlightened lord who discovered future Meiji Restoration leaders Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, this garden is also the greatest stage for understanding Nariakira's legacy.
