Overview

The site of the Shinsengumi's final Kyoto headquarters, used from 1867 until the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in January 1868. It was located near present-day Higashi-shiokoji in Shimogyo-ku, south of Kyoto Station. After relocating from Nishi Honganji, the Shinsengumi established an independent base here. Battle of Toba-Fushimi Site

1868年（慶応4年）1月3日から6日にかけて、京都南部の鳥羽・伏見地区で戦われた戊辰戦争の緒戦。大政奉還後も旧幕府軍と新政府軍の緊張が続く中、旧幕府側の会津藩・桑名藩・新選組らの軍勢と、薩摩・長州を中心とする新政府軍が衝突した。数においては旧幕府軍が約1万5千名で新政府軍の約5千名を大幅に上回ったが、錦の御旗を掲げた新政府軍に対して旧幕府軍の士気は崩れ、数日間の戦闘で新政府軍が勝利した。この戦闘で旧幕府軍の総大将・徳川慶喜は大坂城から江戸へ逃走し、以後の戦況を決定づけた。新選組も近藤勇・土方歳三の指揮のもとで参戦したが、洋式装備の新政府軍に敗退し、鳥羽・伏見をもって新選組の京都時代に終止符が打たれた。現在、鳥羽・伏見には各所に激戦地の碑が建てられており、御香宮神社境内には砲弾の跡が残る。戊辰戦争の出発点となった歴史的戦場として多くの研究者や歴史ファンが訪れる。
