What Deity is Enshrined at Kashima and Kasuga Shrines?
Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto (Brave-Awful-Possessing-Male-Deity) is the principal deity of Kashima Jingu in Ibaraki Prefecture and one of the four deities of Kasuga Taisha in Nara. His name translates as “fierce thunder deity” and he is revered as Japan’s supreme god of thunder, swords, and martial arts. Every major school of Japanese swordsmanship traces its spiritual lineage to him.
The Myth of the Land Cession
In Japan’s founding mythology, Takemikazuchi was sent by Amaterasu to negotiate the peaceful handover of the land from Okuninushi. When Okuninushi’s son Takeminakata challenged the deity to a sumo-like test of strength, Takemikazuchi crushed his arm “like a young reed” — a divine wrestling match that became the mythological origin of sumo itself.

Major Shrines to Visit
Kashima Jingu is the grand headquarters shrine, its primeval cedar forest creating a profound atmosphere of divine power. Kasuga Taisha in Nara is where the deity was transferred in 710 CE and became the tutelary shrine of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Kashima Jingu Okumiya is the inner sanctuary deep in the forest, considered the most sacred spot. Katori Jingu enshrines the companion deity Futunushi — the pair are always visited together as the “twin pillars of martial deities.” Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura belongs to the overlapping martial deity worship circle.
Worship Practices
Walk on the sides of the approach path, not the centre (reserved for the deity)
Visit both the main hall (honden) and the inner sanctuary (okumiya)
Standard two bows, two claps, one bow at the haiden
Pray for any competition: exams, sports, job hunting, business
FAQ
Do I need to practice martial arts to visit Kashima Jingu?
Not at all. Takemikazuchi’s blessings extend to any competitive situation — exams, job hunting, sports, or business negotiations. The shrine is popular among athletes, students, and professionals alike.
What is the East-Kanto Three Shrines Pilgrimage?
It covers Kashima Jingu (Ibaraki), Katori Jingu (Chiba), and Ikisu Shrine (Ibaraki). Since the Edo period, this circuit was traditionally completed after the Ise Grand Shrine pilgrimage as a rite of purification for warriors and commoners in eastern Japan.
