The legendary swordsman Tsukahara Bokuden was born in Kashima in 1489 as the son of Urabe Kakuken, a priest of Kashima Jingu. Training in swordsmanship from childhood in Kashima, he founded the Kashima Shinto-ryu school rooted in devotion to the martial deity Takemikazuchi enshrined here. He is said to have won all 19 of his duels and participated in 37 battles without ever being wounded — a legendary sword saint who represents the most important link between Kashima Jingu's martial deity worship and the history of Japanese swordsmanship.
