Frequently Asked Questions
Kirie goshuin (papercut goshuin) are artistically designed pilgrimage stamps that combine a shrine or temple’s symbolic imagery — buildings, crests, flora — intricately cut from washi paper and combined with handwritten calligraphy and vermilion seals. Spreading rapidly via social media from the late 2010s, kirie goshuin now represent one of the most distinctive genres within Japan’s goshuin culture.

Around 300 white plum trees bloom in the precinct of this shrine to Sugawara no Michizane, the divine patron of learning. The bullfinch-and-plum motif of the shrine's kirie goshuin is drawn directly from this scenery.

History and Appeal of Kirie Goshuin — Why Are They So Popular?
The kirie goshuin boom was driven significantly by Instagram and other social media platforms, where their photogenic visual impact attracted wide attention. Unlike traditional goshuin featuring only calligraphy and stamps, the transparent cut-paper patterns — especially when held up to light — offer a uniquely aesthetic and collectible experience.
How are kirie goshuin made?
Production Method
Characteristics
Hand-cut by artisans
Each piece is cut individually; high rarity; limited numbers
Laser-cut
Precise and uniform; enables higher production volumes
Both methods typically use washi (Japanese handmade paper) such as shoji paper or Echizen washi. Designs cut from white or gold paper are particularly popular.
How much do kirie goshuin cost compared to standard goshuin?
Kirie goshuin honorariums range from 500 to 2,000 yen, compared to 300–500 yen for standard goshuin. Hand-cut versions often cost 1,000 yen or more due to the labor involved. Seasonal and monthly-rotation designs may sell out before their availability period ends.

Notable Kirie Goshuin Sites Across Japan
Yushima Tenmangu (Yushima Tenjin)
Yushima Tenmangu (Bunkyo, Tokyo) enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. During the Plum Blossom Festival in February, it issues an especially beautiful plum-blossom kirie goshuin — white washi intricately cut with plum branches and flowers that cast delicate shadows when held to the light. The festival period (early February to early March) is extremely busy; early morning visits are strongly recommended. Multiple designs rotate throughout the year.
Kanda Myojin (Kanda Shrine)
Kanda Myojin (Chiyoda, Tokyo) is known for its zuijin-mon (guardian gate) kirie goshuin, featuring the Agyo and Ungyo guardian deity pair against gold washi with a bold vermilion seal. Special festival edition kirie goshuin are available during the Kanda Matsuri (May).

Asakusa Shrine
Asakusa Shrine (Taito, Tokyo) issues a mikoshi-motif kirie goshuin during the Sanja Matsuri season (May), capturing the energy of Asakusa’s beloved festival in elegant papercut form. Popular as a commemorative souvenir of the festival.
Oyama Afuri Shrine
Oyama Afuri Shrine (Isehara, Kanagawa) is an ancient shrine on Mt. Oyama in the Tanzawa range, offering a celebrated mountain-and-sea-of-clouds kirie goshuin symbolizing the sacred mountain worship tradition. Separate goshuin are issued at the summit main shrine and the lower Shimo-sha. Most visitors take the cable car to the Shimo-sha and receive goshuin there.

More than a hundred portable shrines (mikoshi) are carried through the streets of Asakusa. This mikoshi procession is a recurring motif in the shrine's kirie goshuin designs.

How to affix kirie goshuin to your goshuincho
Kirie goshuin are typically issued as pre-cut semi-transparency papers. Use acid-free washi adhesive or double-sided tape for mounting. Acid-free archival adhesive is recommended for long-term preservation.
The joy of holding kirie goshuin up to light
One of the greatest pleasures of kirie goshuin is their appearance when held up to light — the cutwork patterns create a stunning luminous effect with intricate shadow play. Holding a smartphone LED beneath the paper or using natural light are popular techniques for photography.
Preservation Method
Characteristics
Mounted in goshuincho
Manageable with other goshuin; less portable for thick cuts
Framed as wall art
Display as interior art; especially suitable for large designs
Portfolio file
Prevents folding; dedicated kirie files available commercially

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need an appointment for kirie goshuin?
Practices vary by shrine. Popular designs (especially monthly-rotation or limited editions) can sell out quickly on the day. Check official SNS or websites before visiting and plan to arrive early.
Can kirie goshuin be displayed outside a goshuincho?
Yes — framing them as decorative art is increasingly popular. Many pilgrims with especially beautiful designs display them in frames as home decor items.
Are kirie goshuin always pre-written (kaki-oki) rather than written directly?
Yes, almost all kirie goshuin are issued as pre-made (kaki-oki) pieces since the cut-paper design cannot be directly written into a visitor’s goshuincho the way traditional calligraphy can.
Should I receive the standard goshuin or the kirie goshuin first?
There is no rule, but the typical approach is to receive the standard goshuin at the main office first, then request the kirie goshuin. If the issuance windows are separate, ask at the office upon arrival.
What should I do if the kirie goshuin in my old goshuincho starts to peel?
Re-adhere using neutral (acid-free) washi paste. Commercial adhesives like Bondage G17 may cause discoloration over time; use archival-quality washi adhesive for safe long-term preservation.
