Amida-ji Hakone: Refuge Temple of Princess Kazu-no-miya
Amidaji in Tonosawa, Hakone, was founded in 1604 by the ascetic monk Mokujiki Dansei. Famous as the funeral site of Princess Kazu-no-miya (1877), the temple now hosts biwa lute performances and is celebrated for its hydrangeas.
Amidaji in Tonosawa, Hakone, was founded in 1604 by the ascetic monk Mokujiki Dansei (a “tree-eating” monk who renounced grain). Famous as the site of the 1877 funeral of Princess Kazu-no-miya (1846-1877) — the imperial princess who married Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi for political union — the temple now hosts biwa lute performances by its abbot, who recites classical narratives like the Heike Monogatari. Hydrangeas in June-July make the rain-soaked approach especially atmospheric. A 20-minute uphill walk from Tonosawa Station preserves its hidden quietude.
