The mausoleum of Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai domain, built in 1637 by his son Tadamune on the hill of Kyogamine. The magnificent Momoyama-style structure was destroyed in the 1945 air raids on Sendai and faithfully reconstructed in 1979. The grounds also contain the mausoleums of the second lord Tadamune (Kanseinden) and the third lord Tsunamune (Zennoden).

Zuihoden is Masamune's own mausoleum. When he died in 1636 at age 70, a magnificent Momoyama-style mausoleum was erected at Kyogamine per his dying wishes. Excavations of the tomb revealed imported items from Korea and China alongside his remains, testifying to Masamune's active pursuit of continental trade and cultural exchange.
