Between 1604 and 1609, Masamune rebuilt the long-derelict Zuiganji at great expense, summoning master craftsmen from Kii-Kumano to create a main hall and kitchen that are masterpieces of Momoyama culture, now designated National Treasures. He established it as the family temple of the Date clan, creating the finest Zen temple in the Tohoku region.
