Entsuin is a Rinzai-sect temple adjacent to Zuiganji in Matsushima, founded in 1647 as the mausoleum of Mitsumune, Masamune's grandson who died at 19. Its Sankei-den (Important Cultural Property) features Japan's oldest painted roses. Known as the "rose temple" and a popular spot for love-related prayers.
Origins
Entsuin was founded in 1647 by Date Tadamune, the second lord of the Sendai domain, to pray for the repose of his son Mitsumune, who died at the young age of 19. Entsuin was built in 1647 as the mortuary temple for Mitsumune, Date Masamune's grandson. The oldest rose painting in Japan, found on the shrine altar within Sankeiden honoring Mitsumune, is said to reflect Western influences brought by the Keicho embassy that Masamune himself dispatched to Europe via Hasekura Tsunenaga in 1613 — a lasting trace of his overseas diplomacy.
