Zennoj is a Shingon Sennyuji-school sub-temple said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai at Hachijo Aburanokoji, and incorporated into Sennyuji as a guardian sub-temple by imperial order of Emperor Go-Nara in 1551.
