In 1590, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Siege of Odawara — the final campaign to unify Japan — Hachigata Castle, guarded by this Hachiman shrine, was surrounded by Hideyoshi's generals Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu. After more than a month under siege, the castle surrendered, falling under Hideyoshi's unified rule.
