Overview

Hachigata Castle in Yorii, Osato County, is a hilltop castle built in 1476 by Nagao Kageharu on the cliffs at the confluence of the Ara River and Fukasawa River. Later expanded as the stronghold of Hojo Ujikuni, it withstood a month-long siege by 35,000 troops under Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara Campaign (1590). Origins

1590

小田原征伐

1590年（天正18年）、豊臣秀吉が関東の雄・北条氏政・氏直父子の小田原城（現在の神奈川県小田原市）を包囲し、降伏させた軍事作戦。秀吉は20万以上の大軍で小田原城を囲み、支城を次々と落としながら長期包囲戦を展開。100日余りの籠城の末に北条氏は降伏し、戦国大名としての北条氏は滅亡した。この征伐により豊臣政権の全国統一がほぼ完成した。家康は小田原征伐に貢献した功績として旧北条氏の関東8か国に転封され、江戸を本拠地とすることになった。この江戸入府が後の江戸幕府開創への第一歩となった。

In the 1590 Odawara Campaign, Maeda Toshiie led the northern army with Uesugi Kagekatsu and Sanada Masayuki and, after Hachioji, besieged Hachigata Castle. The commander Hojo Ujikuni held out about a month with 3,000 men, but Toshiie's side secured a surrender on terms sparing his soldiers' lives. Ujikuni took Buddhist vows and entered Toshiie's service as a guest retainer.

During the 1590 Odawara campaign, the northern army of 35,000 under Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu besieged Hachigata for about a month. Commander Hojo Ujikuni resisted with 3,000 men but surrendered. A key chapter in Hideyoshi's northern Kanto strategy.

Visiting Information

Hours

Hachigata Castle Park itself is free to enter and generally open at all times. The History Museum within the park is open 9:30 AM–4:30 PM (last entry 4:00 PM). Closed Mondays (or the following day if a holiday), the day after a public holiday, and year-end/New Year.

Admission

The castle ruins park is free. History museum admission: general ¥200, students ¥100. Free for ages 70+, elementary/junior-high students and under, and disability certificate holders.
