Tsurugaoka Castle Ruins are the former seat of the 140,000-koku Shonai domain, held by the Sakai clan from 1622 through the Edo period. Now Tsuruoka Park, the site preserves moats and earthworks alongside the domain academy Chidokan (a National Historic Site) and Shonai Shrine, and is celebrated for 600 cherry trees.
