Overview
Shonai Shrine was founded in 1877 on the former keep of Tsurugaoka Castle to enshrine the Sakai lords of Shonai domain, including Sakai Tadatsugu, one of Tokugawa's Four Heavenly Kings. The shrine preserves the memory of Shonai's role in the Boshin War and sits at the heart of Tsuruoka Park.
