Origins

In the late Sengoku period, Otani Yoshitsugu entered Tsuruga Castle as its lord. Under the Toyotomi regime it became the base of Echizen and Tsuruga after Shibata Katsuie of Kitanosho Castle fell. Otani Yoshitsugu, lord of Tsuruga Castle, was renowned as Ishida Mitsunari's closest friend. At the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he joined the Western Army out of loyalty to Mitsunari and fought Tokugawa Ieyasu before being defeated. Their friendship has been portrayed in many historical novels and NHK dramas, and the castle ruins remain a place to reflect on that bond.

Otani Yoshitsugu, lord of Tsuruga Castle, was a trusted retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie at Shizugatake, Echizen and Tsuruga became a Toyotomi stronghold, and Yoshitsugu was installed as castle lord. Out of loyalty to Hideyoshi, he later fought for the Western Army at Sekigahara, sharing the castle's fate.

Otani Yoshitsugu governed the strategic Wakasa-Echizen crossroads as lord of Tsuruga Castle under the Toyotomi regime. At the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he joined the Western Army out of loyalty to his ally Ishida Mitsunari and died in the defeat, after which Tsuruga Castle was abandoned. A statue of Yoshitsugu now stands at the ruins, commemorating his legacy.
