Tsujido Tenman Shrine, founded around 1050, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as its principal deity. After Michizane's death in 903, shrines dedicated to him spread across Japan to appease his spirit, and this shrine similarly came to venerate him as "Tenjin-sama," the guardian of learning. The plum trees in the precinct, blooming white and pink each February and March, honor the legend of the "flying plum" beloved in Michizane's famous farewell poem.
