An ancient Shingon-shu Daigo-ha temple founded in 709 and widely known as Tsu Kannon. It is counted among the Three Great Kannon Temples of Japan alongside Sensoji and Osu Kannon. The principal image is said to have been caught in a fisherman's net off Akogi-ura. The current main hall and five-story pagoda were rebuilt in 1968.
The temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 709 by the monk Gyoki.
