Tamukeyama Hachimangu in Nara City was established in 749 when Emperor Shomu summoned the deity from Usa Hachimangu to serve as a guardian shrine for the construction of the Great Buddha at Todaiji. Sugawara no Michizane visited Tamukeyama Hachimangu and composed the celebrated waka: "This time, with no offerings to hand — Tamukeyama: the brocade of autumn leaves, as the gods will it."
