Built by Ikoma Chikamasa in 1590, Takamatsu Castle is one of Japan's three great water castles, its moats filled directly with seawater from the Seto Inland Sea. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Kyushu campaign, Ikoma Chikamasa was granted Sanuki Province in 1587 and chose this Seto Inland Sea-facing site to build Takamatsu Castle in 1590 — a groundbreaking design with moats filled directly by seawater, laying the foundation for one of Japan's Three Great Water Castles. He continued developing it as his seat of power until retiring in 1602.
