Suo Kokubunji was founded in 741 under Emperor Shomu's decree as the provincial temple of Suo. It is one of the few kokubunji temples preserving its original precinct layout, designated a National Historic Site. The 1779 main hall is an Important Cultural Property housing a seated Yakushi Nyorai statue.
