Amidaji was founded in 1195 by the monk Chogen, famed for rebuilding Todaiji in Nara. The temple served as a base for gathering timber in Suo Province. Its Kamakura-era stone bath, still in use, is an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. Famous as an Ajisai (hydrangea) Temple with 4000 bushes.
