Suemori Castle is a Noto mountain-castle ruin in Hodatsushimizu, Ishikawa. Built to command the border between Kaga–Noto and Etchu, it is famous as the stage of the Battle of Suemori in the ninth month of 1584. Origins

Suemori Castle was built by local Noto powers in the Sengoku period and, after Oda Nobunaga's pacification of Noto, came under Maeda Toshiie as a branch castle guarding the Kaga–Etchu border. In 1584, when Suemori Castle was besieged by Sassa Narimasa's large army, Maeda Toshiie rushed through the night from Kanazawa to relieve it and routed Narimasa. This victory at the Battle of Suemori was decisive in establishing Maeda control over Kaga and Noto, laying the foundation of the million-koku Kaga domain.

Sassa Narimasa of Etchu, opposing Hideyoshi, suddenly attacked and besieged the Maeda-held Suemori Castle with around 15,000 men in 1584. He nearly forced its fall, but Toshiie's swift relief drove him off in a major defeat. The loss deepened Narimasa's isolation, and he surrendered to Hideyoshi the following year.

Okumura Nagatomi (Sukeemon), commander of Suemori, withstood the onslaught of Sassa Narimasa's host with only a small garrison; his wife too is said to have rallied the soldiers. His defense, holding until Toshiie's relief arrived, is remembered as an emblem of Maeda valor.
