The Desperate Defense of Suemori — 300 vs. 15,000
In September 1584, Sassa Narimasa launched a surprise attack on Suemori Castle in Noto with 15,000 troops. Okumura Nagatomi had only about 300 defenders. Narimasa's forces overran the second bailey and pressed toward the main keep. Nagatomi even had his wife take up a naginata to help defend, rallying the garrison's morale. After enduring fierce fighting through the night, Maeda Toshiie arrived at dawn with 2,500 reinforcements and struck the Sassa army from behind, routing them. Had Suemori fallen, the Maeda domain would have been split and might have perished entirely. This battle is called the Maeda clan's Okehazama, and Nagatomi's loyal valor has been celebrated ever since.
