Ancient Shingon temple founded in 890 by Fujiwara no Yamakage, nicknamed the temple of the turtle. Yamakage, ancestor of Japanese cuisine, is honored each spring with a ceremonial hocho-shiki knife demonstration. Also the 22nd site of the Saigoku pilgrimage. Turtle motifs throughout the grounds symbolize the longevity blessings this beloved temple offers.

Founded in 890 by Fujiwara no Yamakage. The legend of Yamakage being saved by a turtle as a child is the origin of the principal image — a Thousand-armed Kannon riding a turtle. Yamakage is also known as the founder of hocho-do, the culinary art, and is regarded as the ancestor of Japanese cuisine.
