A hermitage where the early Edo literatus Ishikawa Jozan lived in seclusion. Named after the Hall of Poetry Immortals with portraits of 36 Chinese poets. Known as the birthplace of the shishi-odoshi deer scarer.

Shisendo traces its origins to 1641 (Kan'ei 18), when Ishikawa Jozan (1583–1672), a literatus and former retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, built a modest hermitage at the foot of the hills in Ichijoji, northern Kyoto, at the age of 59.
