Kessanji is a Soto-sect temple in Shiroishi that serves as the mausoleum of Katakura Kojuro Kagetsuna, Masamune's brilliant strategist. The graves of successive Katakura lords make it a pilgrimage site for Sengoku history fans.

Kessanji was founded in 1576 through the deep devotion of Katakura Kojuro Kagetsuna, Date Masamune's chief military strategist who won numerous battles. After Kagetsuna's death it became the Katakura family's ancestral temple, and nearby lies the grave of Masamune's eldest son Hidezane, said to have been executed wearing Aihime's battle coat.
