The Shiroishi Samurai Residence stands in the castle town governed by the Katakura clan, chief retainers of Date Masamune, lord of the Sendai domain. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the Katakura ruled Shiroishi under Masamune and organized residential districts for their retainers. The Koseki family, mid-ranking Katakura vassals, is said to have lived here for generations.
